What is there not to love about Montpellier? To me as far as towns in Southern France go Montpellier has it all. A rich history, fantastic architecture, a young and active population, local wine, tasty food and a vast amount of restaurant and bars to enjoy it.

Here is one of its many hidden wonders. Les Bains is as its names says set in the old public bath. Get through a tiny door and enter the sumptuous terrace. Century old palm trees will provide some of that much needed shade and the sound of fresh water in the fountain will help cool you of a little bit. The building surrounds that square terrace. Many private rooms of different sizes allow you to have some privacy over diner if you decide to eat in. The main restaurant area has a well furnished bar and a very alive atmosphere. The food is inspired by local products and the menu varies with the seasons. A great wine list is focused mainly on regional wines but one should always drink local anyway.
I recommend this hidden place wholeheartedly
Little things you should be warned about: the waiters can be quit pedantic about the wine and from 11.30 pm onward you might here the neighboring disco/bar and its not so recent french pop!
