Frankfurt

Today I would like to share my Frankfurt experience. I have not picked this weekend destination and I have to admit that it would probably be at the bottom of my romantic getaway list. In the recent years Frankfurt has emerged as the financial centre of Germany, it boasts incredible skyscrapers and is home to the headquarters of the largest German banks. The impression of the city that I had was grey, cold, incredibly conventional, boring and unwelcoming. I have to say that now I did change my mind. My mission was to spend a ‘German day’, get a taste of the local culture. Getting away from the financial centre I headed to the river. What peace in such a sunny day. Sitting down enjoying a Weiss beer made Frankfurt a better place already. My more ambitious friends went on to visit the Goethe Museum and embarked on the Apfelwein train which is the equivalent of the City Tour buses except that you are offer large amounts of Apfelwein (a much worse version of cider). By this time we had worked up an appétit for some Frankfurt speciality food. I wanted tradition, aw boy! I got it! We went to the very warm and welcoming Apfelwein Wagner. A huge restaurant absolutely packed with cheerful Germans. To my great surprise no beer on the menu! Incredibly large portions of food were served all around. A local speciality is the Grean Sauces (which frankly tastes like freshly cut grass in a yogurt) and Kaiser mit music… I do not dare to explain what the music was, ask a Frankfurter! Going with Schnitzel is a safer bet. Despite not serving the most elaborate food the Germans know how to enjoy it. We had a table of 20 males drinking Apfelwein from nicely decorated 3 litre jars and singing their hearts out right behind us. Far, far away from my ‘cold’ stereotype! A very fun evening, everyone should experience something like that.
