Whatching Le Clos just stealing the final of the 200m butterfly from Micheal Phelps made me want to write about South Africa. There is so much energy, beauty and joy in this country as I am sure you will have noticed watching the 2010 Football World Cup. My trip started at Sodwana Bay, a beautyful streach of wild beach south of Swaziland and North of Durban. We stayed at Sodwana Bay lodge, the biggest hotel resort nearby. We slept in small comfortable bungalows that looked like African huts! Surrounded by green grass and palm trees there is a definite holiday feel to the place.
The lodge is not so much famous for its accommodation or catering but for the quality of its diving centre and the experience of its instructors. I should probably have mentioned that the bay is one of the most famous diving spots in South Africa, the coral reef is home to an incredible variety of fish, shells and even small sharks! (not the Great Whites obviously) I was simply stunned by the beauty of the underwater world, it is fantastic to see so many different species at a time!
Sodwana Bay is rather secluded as it is surrounded by animal reserves. After seeing the underwater world you can carry on on firm ground and explore the surroundings, don't be surprised if you run into some rhinoceros or elephants! The reserves are vasts, not many tourists will cross your path. And if you happen to drive back at night be careful, after dawn the SA choose to move from village to village and it is difficult to spot them! There is always something happening in the bush...
