After 5 days at Sodwana Bay and a fresh Padi Open water diver certificate we made our way south to the only privately owned safari lodge set on the banks of Lake St Lucia within the iSimangaliso Wetland Park. I did not quiet know what to expect as we crossed what looked like a old border gate but was in fact the entrance to the reserve. After driving for a few minutes we heard rather rude loud noises. The Hippos were welcoming us in style! Further on a bunch of galloping zebras passed right in front of the car! As we thought that this was enough emotions for the day Pumba in person came down to lead us to the lodge, happily trotting along his tail high up in the air!
We finally arrived to Makakatana Bay Lodge. (The name was taken from a Zulu Chief who lived in the area many years ago). It was splendid! I felt like the decor had been taken straight from 'Out of Africa'. The main lodge was spacious and airy with solid exotic woof furniture, animal fur spread across the floor, books, maps, binoculars, all the adventure gear! The rangers welcomed us with a refreshing local beverage before showing us the property.
Makakatana Bay Lodge has only 5 bungalows which makes it an exclusive intimate holiday destination. All the buildings are on pillotti and connected to each other by an elevated wooden path to prevent the snakes getting in the guests way. The bungalow themselves have everything you could dream of. A large bedroom with heavenly bed, African paintings and a private deck terrace from which you can admire the elephants. Separate toilets and bathroom and, my personal favourite an outside shower. Attention to detail is well worth their 4 star rating, our luggage was already in the room, then we went out for diner (delicious and serve around a large fire under the stars) and as we came back the beds have been undone so we just had to slide ourselves in! Breakfast was also one of the highlights, cooked fresh and served on the deck of the main lodge it was accompanied by a pleasant show: 6 different birds giving themselves a morning freshening up!
Makakatana Bay is mostly visited by bird lovers as it is one of the biggest bird reserves in SA. The Lodge organises various activities such as boat trips on the lake, exploration days and so on... We unfortunately had too little time to enjoy all that and instead we had a quick jump in the infinity pool to which (or so we have been told) the elephants and giraffes often come up!
