Stockholm or how to escape the heat!

Imagine a town were everything works, where everybody is helpful and polite, where there is no crime and, the icing on the cake, where everyone speaks English. Welcome to Stockholm!

The city does not give the impression that it was built hundred of years ago, you get the impression that it was carefully ingeniered by a particularly skilled architect not so long ago. Every district serves its purpose. You will find the trendy art in, the business part in joined in the middle by the historic Island of with right to the side of it you will find entertainment island, Stockholm little getaway.

Gamla Stan is the historic center of town. Located on a little island you will find colored buildings, narrow paved streets, endless restaurants and coffee shops, lovely hotels overlooking the river. I am not certain you can ever strike a 'good deal' in Sweden but the Gran Hotel seemed reasonable considering the magnificent breakfast buffet and the lovely sunny rooms overlooking the water. Wondering around the street at night is a magnificent experience, everything is quiet and magical it might remind you of the atmosphere of other northen eastern cities such as Gdank, Cracow or even Prague.

Change of scenery we are entering Sodermalm the 'cool' part of town. Some of you might have read the Millenium trilogy. We took the tour! It is worth it not so much to help you picture the environment described in the book but to learn a bit more about the city and the way Swedes live. You will be impressed by the number of antique and vintage shops mixing with modern design boutiques and, newly to me, tattoo studios!

Having not spent much time in Normalm probably the main part of town but also the business area i will finish my post by walking you through the wonders of Djugardstadden. What an opportunity for a capital to have stone-throw away an amusement park, a zoo, a live 'history' museum, gorgeous botanical gardens and countless bike routs. The island use to be property of the kings and their hunting grounds, it is now public but it explains why it was preserve from urbanization.
The open air historic museum giving you an insight into the lives of 18th century Swedish workers was highly interesting and entertaining, the Vasa museum is worth a detour, but simply wondering around the island, having a picnic or a beer at one of the many rive side cafes is priceless.
One last thing, its Viking country so jump on a boat and explore! The beaches nearby are gorgeous and you might spot some otters!
