Copenhagen

After travelling to Stockholm earlier on in the year I could not get enough of the Nordic cities. Was it something about the architecture? about their very attractive tall and blond citizens? about the fantastic design shops? No matter what it was I had to go back.

I stayed at the Scandic hotel near the Triviolli park. The Scandic is a well know Nordic chain of hotels but this particular one pays a special tribute to the city's beloved writer Hans Andersen. A dreamy setting with butterflies, trees and flowers on the wall paper, oversize chairs, and funky lights, all taken straight out of his magical novels. This combined with the comfort of Scandinavian king sized beds and modern design elements made it the perfect place to stay, it is not often that you stay in a large, high standard hotel that manages to have so much character.

Copenhagen is home to the best restaurant in the world, molecular cooking being at its peak. Traditional food remains the Danishs preferred food even if they have tried to diversified their diet to make it more healthy. For a quick pic of what it taste like i recommend the Norden Cafe. This Art Deco brasserie host tourists and locals in equal proportions, those who dear to try the Danish Burger will understand why. I strongly recommend a coffee at the best coffee shop in town Europa, which happens to be right across the street.

You are only staying for a short weekend? The best way to see most of the city is to get on on of the boats. It will run you up and down the main canal and you'll see the mermaid, the fantastic opera house, get a glimps of the castle (which requieres and independant visit, the Danish being quieter found of the royalty and their queen in particular). It is worth staying longer to wonder around the colourful streets, admire the design and flower shops, have diner by the canals and get a real feel of the city.

There are many more interesting places to visit but I will mention one: Christiana. This part of town has been taken over in the 60's by hippies and anti capitalist who believe in a different way of living. Today Christiana might not be as independent as it once was but you can still freely buy pot, admire the street art, listen to its citizen's political praises and enjoy the fast food. Christiana had its own charm if one cares to understand it.
